Spanish Sangria

I first learned about sangria in high school when I learned about the Spanish culture. It was fascinating to learn that Spain has such a wide variety of beverages and meals that they indulge in. When I turned 21, I tried a bottle of “sangria” from the liquor store and I was severely disappointed. It was too sweet and super sugary. From then on, I had this bad taste in my mouth about this seemly delicious drink. It wasn’t until I traveled back to Spain as an adult, and tried the real deal that I became obsessed. I thought that after my third time being there, I would try and recreate some Spanish sangria for myself. Especially since the bottled stuff in the U.S. doesn’t come close to the real thing!

Tutti Frutti

One of my favorite parts of sangria is how fresh it tastes! It’s the perfect drink to sip on your back porch in the Summer. This is due to the copious amount of fresh fruits that are sliced and dunked in the red wine. The timing of the recipe is essentially spent cutting up the fruit. However, I would suggest letting the fruit steep in the liquids for an extra 10-20 minutes to extract as much flavor as possible. This will provide you with the tastiest and most flavorful batch of sangria that you could make. If you are thinking about making it, take a trip to your local farmer’s market and pick up the fresh ingredients! You’ll be a sip away from daydreaming about a sunny day in Barcelona!

Equipment

  • mortar and pestle

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle red wine
  • 2 cups club soda
  • 1/2 cup tart cherry juice
  • 1/2 cup white wine (sub more club soda or red wine if you don't have an open bottle of white)
  • 1/2 cup Triple Sec
  • 1 1/2 oranges sliced
  • 1/2 lemon sliced
  • 2 pints blackberries separate in half and see recipe

Instructions

  • Add the liquids to a pitcher and set aside in the freezer
  • Slice the oranges and lemon and place the sliced fruit in the sangria pitcher, place back in the freezer
  • Take 1 pint of blackberries and muddle them with a mortar and pestle (or in a bowl with a spoon)
  • Dump the muddled blackberries and 2nd pint of whole blackberries into the pitcher
  • Serve immediately, or allow to chill in the fridge until ready to serve the same night

Notes

If you are going to have leftovers (lol), remove the fruit and store it in a separate container overnight. Add the fruit back into the pitcher when you are ready to serve the sangria. If the fruit has gone bad, chop more and allow it to steep in the sangria for another 10 minutes in the fridge prior to serving.

I would not recommend chilling the sangria with ice. It will water down the flavor and not taste as good as it should. Try using rock ice cubes, or freeze freshly sliced oranges and add directly to your glass.
