Central Market Lancaster

One of my favorite parts about living in Lancaster is the abundance of fresh produce. There is a roadside farm stand or market around every corner! Since I live in the city, I spend most of my market days in downtown Lancaster. There, you will find Central Market, the oldest running public farmer’s market in the country! Actually, just last week, many wonderful vendors in Central Market and the surrounding streets were interviewed and written about in The New York Times! How cool is that?! At market, you will find almost anything you can think of. From meat, dairy, or produce vendors, to freshly brewed coffee, there is something for everyone at Lancaster Central Market.

Strawberries, Anyone?

When I think of buying strawberries, I think of childhood memories with my Nana. Almost every Tuesday, we would go to Roots Market and buy fresh strawberries. If any of the pints didn’t get eaten on the way home, they would get doused in sugar. Then, we would sit at the counter and giggle over a nice bowl of warm strawberry shortcake with cold milk. Sometimes if I was lucky, she would have some ice cream that I could scoop on top! My favorite thing about food is that it brings people together. Something so simple as strawberries created memories that last forever.

Don’t Knock It ‘Til You Try It

I never used to imagine putting fruit on my salads. I always was a Chicken Caesar salad kind of girl. Even today, my favorite salad is Buffalo Chicken topped with crumbled blue cheese. No fruit. It wasn’t until I became a foodie that I entertained fruit on my salads. When I started eating out more as an adult, I noticed many restaurants sold salads with fruit on them. It was usually some combination of cheese, fruit, and nuts. That is where I got the idea for this Strawberry, Pecan, & Goat Cheese Salad. Also, don’t forget to drizzle some balsamic vinegar on top!

Ingredients

  • 1 head Romaine lettuce
  • 1 head butter lettuce small
  • 20 strawberries washed and diced
  • 1/2 cup pecans
  • 4 T balsamic vinegar
  • 2 T extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 oz goat cheese

Instructions

  • Wash an cut lettuce, combining them together and separating them into two salads
  • Top with all the solid ingredients
  • Drizzle on the balsamic vinegar and olive oil
  • Serve and enjoy!

Notes

If meal prepping the salads, or saving the second one for another day, do not put the dressing on. Mix the liquid ingredients together and keep in a separate dressing container until you are ready to eat the salad. To keep the lettuce even more fresh, keep all of the toppings in one container, and the lettuce in another. The juices from the strawberries can also make the lettuce wilt.
